Sometimes, all it takes is talking to someone, hearing other’s stories, or attending an Advancing Families & Individuals Needing Services (AFINS) workshop to feel motivated and take action. I had applied for services for my daughter, Susan (Brook), with the Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD). I’d heard from others that the process could be challenging, so I was just waiting patiently.
Then, on October 22, 2024, I attended a workshop, led by TJ McCoy, founder of Master Caregivers. His talk inspired me to take the next steps without delay.
After the workshop, I headed straight to the APD office, in Wildwood. My goal was to set up a meeting with Mark Lewis, and it worked out. I met with him the next day morning and completed the necessary paperwork. I also called Brenda Sanchez and requested that my daughter’s Waiver Support Coordinator be assigned as Matthew Bramm.
Together we can make things happen! Rhonda’s story shines as a great example of the power of community and initiative. Hearing from others and attending events like AFINS workshops shows just how valuable these gatherings are for families navigating the APD system. By being proactive, Rhonda took a big step toward securing the best support for her daughter, Brooke. Connecting directly with people like Mark Lewis at the APD office and securing a trusted Waiver Support Coordinator like Matthew Bramm could make a world of difference.
This story reminds us that even a small push—like an encouraging workshop—can help parents and caregivers turn intentions into actions, especially within systems that often feel overwhelming. Rhonda’s determination is inspiring and reflects how families, advocates, and support networks can make significant progress together!
