Charting a Confident Future for Individuals with Disabilities

The future can feel uncertain and overwhelming for families supporting individuals with disabilities. For families and professionals alike questions about resources, long-term planning, and navigating complex systems often bring a mix of fear and uncertainty. To provide clarity and encouragement, Collier Schools recently hosted “Navigating the Future of a Child with Disabilities,” a transformative event aimed at empowering families with actionable guidance and hope.

Featuring a panel of three inspiring women—Stephanie Nordin, Jessica Tursi, and Adela Hernandez—the event highlighted real-life experiences and expert advice. Stephanie, a mother of two sons with disabilities, reassured attendees that while challenges are inevitable, safety nets are available to provide peace of mind. Adela emphasized the importance of proactive planning, such as enrolling in the iBudget Pre-enrollment List through the Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD), which ensures quicker access to essential services. She also underscored that families retain full control over how and when they use these services.

The panelists encouraged families to embrace planning as a way to create options, not as a loss of autonomy. Their words of wisdom were paired with actionable steps: apply early for the Medicaid Waiver, maintain communication with coordinators, and stay involved as advocates in shaping the future. Most importantly, they reminded attendees that they are not alone—resources, community, and shared commitment make the journey less daunting.

With preparation, support, and a strong sense of community, families can turn fear into empowerment and face the future with confidence and hope.
