New Comprehensive Toolkit Empowers Adults with Cerebral Palsy
For years, most cerebral palsy (CP) resources have centered on children. Now, a groundbreaking 172-page “Adult CP Toolkit” is shifting that focus to the growing population of adults with cerebral palsy.
Developed over three years by the Cerebral Palsy Research Network, this first-of-its-kind guide offers practical strategies and expert advice on every stage of adult life — from finding housing and caregivers to navigating self-advocacy, mental health, intimacy, nutrition, sleep, and managing age-related changes.
With more than 800,000 adults living with cerebral palsy in the United States, the toolkit provides valuable guidance for individuals, their families, and health care providers.
“As the parent of a young adult with CP, I have spent years searching for the best care and support for my daughter,” said Michele Shusterman, cofounder of the Cerebral Palsy Research Network and project manager for the toolkit. “Now, as my daughter begins adulthood, I am grateful for the wisdom and practical insight this resource provides to empower her generation and those who follow.”
This new resource marks a major step forward in addressing the lifelong needs of people with cerebral palsy — helping adults with CP live more independently, advocate for their rights, and access the support they deserve.
